Genesis 1:14,15 Then God said, 'Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the Earth; and it was so.
Ephesians 5:13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light.
Manifest - Clearly apparent to the sight or understanding.
2 Corinthians 4:6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
It is very humbling to look at the sky and see how small we are in comparison to the power of God. But it is reassuring to know that when He created the heavens He created them in such a way that they would teach us about Himself because He wanted us to come to understand and know Him better.
1 John 1:5 "This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all."
This is a verse that God brought to my attention one day as I was sitting on a small cliff overlooking downtown Calgary. The sun was blazing down on me from directly ahead and it hit me that this truth about God is also true about the sun. There is no darkness in the sun, only light.
There are many times when I feel disappointed with what I have received in life. I complain to God about why He hasn't used His almighty power to lift me up and give me all the things that I desire. But when the emotions fade I come to the realization that God is perfect and all of His decisions are perfect. Who am I to complain against the Almighty. The bible tells us that God loves us and will do what is best for us. Sometimes we just need to trust that He is all-wise and is always aware of what is going on. 1 Tim 6:6 "Godliness with contentment is great gain." I started to wonder what other similarities there were.
If you were to walk at night without any light you would not know what was surrounding you. Thankfully the sun gives light to the world and enables us to see where we are. In the same way, God gives light to the world through Jesus so that people can see where they stand spiritually in relation to God. Our spiritual senses have been corrupted and lost because of sin but Jesus has come to show us what we couldn't discover on our own. God has given us the Holy Bible to light our path and show us the way. But just as the world turns from the sun and ends up in night, many people also turn from the truth of Jesus and find themselves living in darkness.
The sun is the source of energy for all life. Light from the sun gets converted into energy through photosynthesis by the plants. Then it is distributed to every other living creature on Earth through the food chain. Jesus said that He has come to give us abundant life, (John 10:10) and His light is the source of that life. John 8:12 "Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.'" A person needs to believe the truth that Jesus has revealed to receive the life that He promises. John 14:6 "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'"
The sun also heats the Earth. There is nothing nicer than the warmth of the sun's rays on a beautiful day. Just as the sun comforts us in warmth so Jesus also comforts us. He tells us He loves us and will always take care of those who trust in Him. The comfort of the knowledge of His presence in my life has been priceless over the years. Nothing can beat knowing that an all-mighty God stands for you and not against you.
Jesus once told His disciples to sail across the sea while he stayed behind praying and watching them. After a while they encountered a storm and feared for their lives but Jesus showed up walking on the water and He calmed the storm. They feared for their lives because Jesus seemed too far away too help but the truth was that they were always safe and never out of His reach. He knew what He was doing and saved them at just the right moment. Jesus stands a perfect distance from us all and when we trust in Him He always comes through in His perfect timing. Because of the attitude of the world towards Jesus it is easy to not see the full extent of His power and glory just as it is hard to judge the true size of the sun by its appearance. But we know that the sun is many times larger than the Earth and by faith we accept that Jesus is almighty God and He is able to carry us through this life and bring us to Himself in the next.
The sun appears to be quite small and far away but if the sun were closer to us we would among other things be blinded immediately and if God dwelled on Earth we would be destroyed by the sight of His holiness and purity. In our fallen state we cannot withstand the sight of our perfect God. So God waits in heaven until our earthly bodies perish and we receive our spiritual bodies that can behold the Holiness of God for eternity.
Lasty, there is the moon. That ball of dirt that circles the Earth. The moon is like the church. The moon has no light of its own, but merely reflects the light of the sun. The church of God does not reflect its own light but the light of Jesus. Only when we choose to glorify God and boast in what He has done do we fulfill our purpose and become effective. The followers of God reflect his light to the world so that the world can see the power and love of God in them.
The sun is constant but the moon shifts continually. When the world turns its back on God and chooses to live in the night rather than face the light, God mercifully chooses to shine through His people so that the people in darkness may see the light and turn to Him. But the light of the church is not always constant. Sometimes when full it shines brightly and boldly but other times there is only a sliver for the world to see. And it is the side of the moon that faces the sun that does the reflecting. The church needs to face their Savior boldly to let Him have His way in their lives and deal with their sins and then they will be ready to shine for Jesus. The bible says that "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever." Hebrews 13:8. Sometimes God's people waiver and don't live up to their holy calling, but thankfully God always remains constant. When life seems uncertain, we can always trust that God is faithful and unchanging.
It is in the darkness that the moon shines the brightest. The church has shone the brightest during times of persecutions when evil men tried their utmost to extinguish it's light. They tried to destroy the faith, hope and love of saints only to discover the unstoppable power of God in their hearts. But the harder the world fought, the stronger God's power was in His people. When the moon and sun share the sky, the light of the sun overwhelms the light of the moon and it is barely seen. A person may at first see the light reflected by the church, but when the church points the person to the source, Jesus, He becomes the overwhelming source of light in their life.
God has provided many means for people to discover the truth about him. He has written it in the pages of the bible, on the hearts of those who believe and in the very sky. The Lord is waiting for every man and every woman to respond to His revelation of truth and He is desiring to help any one who decides to repent of their sins and accept Gods help to change. Only God can change a persons heart and only those who receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior can receive Gods strength to change. I geuss the real question is, how are you going to respond to God's light.
Revelations 21:10, 22:5 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of Heaven from God...There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.
